Arginine Vasopressin for Refractory Distributive Shock in Two Adolescents

Joseph D. Tobias, MD

Departments of Child Health and Anesthesiology, Division of Pediatric Critical Care/Pediatric Anesthesiology, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, Tobiasj{at}health.missouri.edu

Arginine vasopressin is a nine amino acid peptide, most commonly known as antidiuretic hormone. Recent investigations in the areas of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the treatment of distributive shock have suggested its possible therapeutic potential. Despite increasing experience in the adult population, there is limited experience with vasopressin administration in pediatric patients. The author reports the use of vasopressin in the treatment of refractory distributive shock in two adolescents. Previous reports of its use and potential therapeutic applications are reviewed.
