Gastroenterology Division, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO Liver disease is uncommon in pregnant women. It can be divided into disorders that occur only during preg nancy and those that can occur during pregnancy, but are not related directly to pregnancy. Jaundice during pregnancy is relatively rare, occurring in 1 in 1,500 pregnancies [ 1 ]. In this review we briefly discuss normal changes in hepatic physiology during pregnancy and then outline the liver disorders of pregnancy, emphasiz ing those that can be severe and result in admission to intensive care units.
